May 31, 2011 |  7:53 pm

One person was killed and two injured in a freak accident in which a sport-utility vehicle went up a steep embankment, flipped over a chain-link fence and landed on its roof, the California Highway Patrol said.

The SUV landed on two bicyclists on a bicycle path that runs parallel to the busy highway in the Rancho Penasquitos neighborhood.

The accident occurred Tuesday afternoon along State Route 56, which connects Interstates 5 and 15 in northern San Diego County. One of the bicyclists was declared dead at the scene. Another bicyclist and the SUV driver were taken to the hospital. Their conditions are unknown.
