Police in the Bay Area are trying to determine the whereabouts of a nursing student who disappeared Friday during a break from rounds at a Hayward hospital.

"The entire Samuel Merritt University community is deeply concerned about the disappearance of our nursing student Michelle Le," university spokeswoman Elizabeth Valente said. "She was last seen Friday evening after she did not return to the hospital from the parking garage at the Kaiser Permanente Hayward Medical Center."

According to KGO-TV, Le, who grew up in San Diego, told a colleague at the hospital that she was going to her car, which was parked in the hospital lot. She never returned, and police found her car parked a few blocks away. Her cellphone suggested activity in several surrounding cities, the KGO-TV report said.

Police have also said Le, 26, has not responded to calls to her cellphone.

Le was attending the San Mateo campus of Samuel Merritt University.
