Man arrested on DUI charge after death of 5-year-old

A man who authorities said struck and killed a 5-year-old child while driving his truck in a Huntington Park neighborhood Sunday was later arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

Robert M. Rivera, 25, was driving a red Ford F-150 truck westbound on Poplar Place between Long Beach Boulevard and Santa Fe Avenue on Sunday when he struck Christian Antonio Martinez in the roadway, California Highway Patrol officials said.

The boy, from Montebello, died at the scene, authorities said.

Rivera stopped after the collision and did not resist arrest. He lives on a nearby street, CHP spokesman Dion Conley said. An autopsy for the child was pending.
