LAPD fatally shoots man they say killed mother, wounded grandmother

A knife wielding suspect was shot and killed by police.

Los Angeles police shot and killed a man who had just fatally stabbed his mother and wounded his grandmother in the frontyard of a Pico-Union residence, authorities said Monday.

The incident was reported about 1:39 p.m. in the 1500 block of Arapahoe Street, according to LAPD officials.

Police were called to the neighborhood by witnesses who reported that a man was stabbing an older woman, later identified as the man's mother, in the frontyard of a residence. According to sources familiar with the investigation, the man also attempted to stab others there.

The first officer on the scene reported hearing screaming and encountered the man in the backyard, where the officer-involved shooting was reported.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, as was his mother. Neither was immediately identified.
