'Granny Bandit' arrested

The alleged “Granny Bandit” responsible for several robberies in Fontana shopping center parking lots was arrested Wednesday, authorities said.

Authorities were interviewing the woman Wednesday afternoon. The Fontana Police Department’s spokesman did not yet have her name or other identifying details.

The string of robberies apparently started Sunday when the scarf-wearing robber, who appeared to be about 80 years old, confronted a woman walking to her vehicle in a Kohl's department store parking lot, authorities said.

The thief, whose face was covered with a floral print scarf and sunglasses, held up a handgun and demanded the victim’s purse, police said. The bandit fled in a dark-colored Dodge Neon, police said.

She struck again Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday under nearly identical circumstances, police said.
