Firefighter falls from roof, breaks ribs

May 21, 2011 |  3:04 pm

A Los Angeles firefighter was taken to the hospital Saturday after falling off a roof and fracturing his ribs, a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman said.

The firefighter was one of 39 who were battling a blaze around midnight at a single-family house in the 8100 block of Mariposa Avenue, in South Los Angeles' Vermont Knolls neighborhood.

Firefighters knocked down the fire in 22 minutes. But as one tried to get off the roof and onto the ladder, the ladder became unstable. The firefighter tumbled and was able to grasp the edge of the roof, but the edge could not sustain his weight and he fell to the ground, spokesman Erik Scott said.

The firefighter could be released from a hospital as early as Sunday.
