2-year-old boy is shot dead, uncle critically wounded outside South L.A. home

A 2-year-old boy was fatally shot in the head Monday night on the porch of a South Los Angeles home as he was being held in the arms of his uncle, who also took a gunshot to the head, Los Angeles police said.

About 8:30 p.m., multiple shots were reported near the home on East 55th Street, said LAPD spokeswoman Karen Rayner.

The uncle, estimated by police to be in his 30s, and the toddler were taken to a hospital, where the child died and the man remains in critical condition.

Rayner said the two were probably unintended victims in the shooting, but the investigation into suspects and their motives is ongoing.

Since Jan. 1, 2007, more than 45 homicides have occurred within one mile of the home, according to The Times' Homicide Report.
