Osama bin Laden death: Bar patrons toast the news

May 1, 2011 |  9:35 pm

At the Redwood Bar and Grill on 2nd Street downtown, patrons first learned of Osama bin Laden's death when a customer got a Tweet from a friend in New Zealand. After a few more tweets, patron Megan Tobin asked the management to switch the TV from an old movie to the news.

When Tobin heard the news, she said, “We’d like to take the day off tomorrow. We’re calling in as Americans!”

Tobin described herself as a staunch supporter of President Obama, who has had mixed reactions about his performance in office. Her friend, Sarah Rodgers, said “this renews my faith a little.”

Bartender Dylan Revelo bought the five patrons in the bar a shot of whiskey to toast the news.

“I couldn’t help but be overjoyed,” he said.

Bob Cantu, the bar’s promoter, said, “It’s about time. Does that mean the guys can come home now?”
