April 7, 2011 |  1:55 pm

Two crew members killed when their Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet jet crashed during a training mission near Naval Air Station Lemoore were identified Thursday, officials said.

Lt. Matthew Ira Lowe, 33, and Lt. Nathan Hollingsworth Williams, 28, were killed when their jet crashed into an agricultural field near the air station shortly after noon Wednesday, officials said. No one on the ground was injured.

The two officers were assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron 122 based at Lemoore and were conducting exercises in preparation for deployment.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and shipmates of the aircrew,” Capt. James Knapp, the base's commanding officer, said in a statement Wednesday. “An investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the mishap.”

The air station is in the San Joaquin Valley, about 40 miles west of Visalia.
