Truck driver arrested in 5 freeway accident

April 23, 2011 | 10:36 pm

A Vons grocery truck driver was arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol after his truck struck the center divider of the southbound 5 Freeway on Saturday morning in Norwalk, causing a spill that closed the freeway for nearly five hours, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Benjamin Arroyo, 44, of Brea, had earlier been taken to Norwalk Community Hospital with minor injuries. The 10 a.m. crash near the Norwalk Boulevard offramp spread debris across the southbound lanes and one northbound lane, forcing the freeway closure.

Roughly 30 feet of guardrail was damaged in the accident.
