Monterey Park police were responding to the incident, reported about 5 p.m., along with several other law enforcement agencies, including the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, Deputy Benjamin Grubb said.

Grubb said a Monterey Park police officer was wounded in the shooting, but Grubb did not know the officer's condition. Grubb said it was also unclear how many assailants were involved. [Updated at 7:30 p.m.: Officials said the officer's condition does not appear to be life-threatening.]

The Sheriff’s Department has sent deputies and helicopters to help with the containment effort, he said.

An officer at the Monterey Park station said gunshots had been reported, but she couldn’t confirm the report of an officer-involved shooting. “Nobody has been able to come back to the station to substantiate anything for me,” she said.

A resident near the incident, who asked that her name not be used, said she heard “a lot of shots” about 5 p.m. and heard police ordering someone to “put the gun down.” There also were multiple helicopters hovering above the neighborhood, she said.
