Map shows location of Sunday's shooting in purple, as well as nearby homicides in red, since January 2007. Click for more details on The Times’ interactive Homicide Report. A man on a bicycle was struck by a car and shot and killed by the occupants in a possible gang-related incident in Silver Lake, officials said.

The man was riding his bicycle Sunday evening when the car hit him near Hoover Street and Del Mar Avenue, said Officer Rosario Herrera of the Los Angeles Police Department.

[Updated at 3:15 p.m.: At least 60 homicides have been reported within 2 miles of Sunday's shooting since January 2007, according to coroner’s data collected for The Times’ interactive Homicide Report.]

She said some of those inside the car then got out and shot the bike rider in the upper body.

The cyclist was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries, about 9:30 p.m. Herrera said there was no description of the car or gunmen.

This reminds me of a time a passing motorist pulled alongside me and spit in my face, then drove by again and threw coins at me. Angelinos don't like cyclists.

No Police presence on the street, no visual presence to help and deter crime. Where are all of the cops at? Well, not counting the officers who are just not there because villiariagosa is a liar and cant keep his campaign commitments, they are sent home because the overtime is counted only in compensatory days off.
Translation: We are out of luck for police service.

The only cyclists I don't like are the idiots who fly off of sidewalks into crosswalks, thinking they have the right-of-way. In reality, they are no different than a car pulling out of a driveway. They are NOT pedestrians.

Kresling -- Maybe he was just trying to cool you down on a hot day and provide you with bus fare to help even further. I hope you thanked him.

Some easy tickets for the police would be the cyclists who ride on the sidewalk instead of the street. These a-holes think they have the right of way over pedestrians.

No witnesses right?

Time for bikers to start wearing go-cams at all times.

Tommy, what in the world possessed you to think this is a good forum to complain about people on bikes annoying you? Besides, read the traffic laws--cyclists do have a right to ride on the sidewalks and crosswalks in LA (or in the streets, with a right to the full lane).

But that's all beside the point. Jesus, I'm so sorry to the victim's friends and family. I hope they catch the perps.

@JZ: the cops can't be everywhere and see everything. What is more disturbing is folks that witnessed the crime but can't give a description... similar to the Dodger beating.

@Paul: ok, that was funny. Good one!

In places where there are no bike lines it would be nice to ride on the sidewalk but LA has some curbs that are over a foot high with no wheelchair ramp.... Thought that was a thing of the past....hell, it's less concrete....(yeah yeah, more in labour costs)....another reason we shouldn't have privatized our road crews. Local workers took pride in their work and got good at it. Private companies do it cheaply and just good enough that they have to re-do it in 5 years.....

Come on people, this isn't about motorists vs cyclists - it's a flat out assasination. They hit him with a car to stop him, and filled him with lead to kill him. That's it!

Police are saying this shooting was gang-releated. The fact this person was on a bike when it happened is merely a side note. Not sure why people feel the need to bring the whole bicyclist/car debate into it.

@Kresling.......... more so if the cyclist is a rival gang banger.

I don't demand that the police be superhuman, but L.A. is notoriously bad for having a police presence. Aside from major crimes, this city is basically lawless. Case in point, a bicyclist gets ran over and murdered in cold blood in the middle of the day on a busy street...no fear of witnesses because of the brain dead, moronic street thug culture and mentality that pervades L.A., and no fear of the police being nearby to see what happened.

I am sure the victim in this shooting really appreciates everybody's regret at his murder but how he could believe that escapes me. It seems most of the respondents to this murder are acting rather flippant about the death of a fellow human being and that speaks volumes about how corrupt our society is becoming. We live in a truly sad and pathetic place and time. As for Aaron's assertion you can ride a bike on a sidewalk in Los Angeles County you may be wrong. I got a ticket ($104 fine) in 1993 for riding a bike on a sidewalk in Gardena on Inglewood Ave. So, unless the law has been changed since 1993, I would argue that bike riding on sidewalks, while understandable in our screwy town, is still illegal.

Amazing world we live in, all the technology in the world is not slowing down the criminal element. Let's just ignore we have a problem Houston and everything will be ok. Our society is dispicable and will fall like Rome. Say goodbye to life in peaceful America and welcome to crime central intercity LA

This sounds like a typical case of white on white crime...

Aaron, are you going to defend the cyclists that don't stop at stop signs or red lights? The only cyclists (and for that matter, motorists) I have issue with are those that don't follow the rules.

That location is within 1000 ft. of both Sunset Junction and Tang's Donuts. There's tons of cyclists in that area.

So many sick twisted people in this country.

Regardless of the nature of the attack, they knew their target and got him. Pretty shocking to be hunted down and to know the killers are probably ready to go to bed and enjoy freedom. Sickens me.. LAPD and the schools can stop gangs ever easily, quite concerning.

Aaron, you are obviously not the sharpest tool in the shed. An article about a bike accident is the perfect place. Many of those accident are caused by the cyclists. And no, they do NOT have the right-of-way in a crosswalk or sidewalks. Read a DMV handbook. They must obey all of the same laws as vehicles.

They are NOT pedestrians, you simpleton. Man, I can't believe they allow people like you to vote. There needs to be an IQ test for voters.

It's against state law to ride a bike on the sidewalk

Under Los Angeles Municipal Code 56.15, bicycles are not prohibited from riding on the sidewalk. Rather LAMC 56.15 prohibits the riding of bicycles (or other human power devices) on sidewalks (bikeways or boardwalks) with a willful or wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property. Riding in a manner is allowed. ;)
