Giants fan critically beaten after Dodgers home opener

Don Mattingly

The Los Angeles Dodgers opening day was marred by violence when a San Francisco Giants fan was critically beaten in the stadium parking lot after the game.

Los Angeles police were searching Friday for two Dodgers fans responsible for assaulting and critically injuring a man wearing San Francisco Giants apparel following Thursday’s game.

"The man suffered a serious head injury during the assault after the game,'' said Los Angeles Police Department Sgt. Sanford Rosenberg, watch commander at the Northeast Station.

Rosenberg said the victim was one of three Giants fans attacked in the parking lot around the end of the game by two unidentified men wearing Dodgers clothing.

The unprovoked attack occurred about 8:30 p.m. in Parking Lot 2 when two men in Dodgers clothing approached three victims in Giants apparel, police said.

The men then attacked the trio, kicking and punching them and shouting expletives about the Giants as they delivered the blows, Rosenberg said. The attack left one victim hospitalized in critical but stable condition, Rosenberg said.

The LAPD arrested at least two people for public intoxication in the parking lot compared to more than 130 on opening day last year.

Detectives ask anyone with information on the attack to call the LAPD's Northeast Station at (213) 485-2563.

Public intoxication has been an issue at Dodger home openers in the past, leading to police crackdowns. It's unclear if drinking was a factor in this case. The Dodgers beat the Giants 2-1.

What A damn shame!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ITS AWFUL TO THINK THE DODGERS SECURITY DOES NOT DO MUCH TO HELP WHEN THERE IS A PROBLEM AT THE STADIUM , SINCE THEY HAVE COMMENTED THEY ARE JUST THERE FOR THE EXTRA MONEY AND HAVE STATED ITS FREE MONEY SINCE THEY DONT DO MUCH AT THE STADIUM, WHAT A SHAME THEY ARE THERE FOR THE GIRL WATCH AND FREE MONEY AS ONE SECURITY STATED I KNOW FOR A FACT I WORK THERE AS WELL NOT AS SECURITY BUT AS GUEST SERVICES, WHERE WE CAN ALOS GET HURT AND NO ONE DOES NAYTHING ABOUT IT.

I am a 65 year old Giants fan. I also remember Roy Campanella, Johnny Roseborough sorry for spelling. Maury Wills, Tommy and Willie Davis. Of course, Kofax and Drysdale. It was a respect type of rivalry. These guys now are no where near the fans we were. Sure, there are great fans still but not as many good, true fans like before. Now people go to a game to drink and get out of hand. Again, not all but way too many. I'm not going to knock L.A. because you guys have the MOUSE. I don't like S.Francisco's residents but I love the city. We have our share of jerks too. So, there is no room for fighting. Bad example to everyone not only kids. If you think I'm wrong, well I'm right on. Low life people will always be around. Let them be that way. If they get out of line, kick them out of the game. If an official sees they are trouble coming in, don't let them in. Common sense. Ya think? Don't let these clowns ruin OUR game. It would be a shame. I am Hispanic but I am totally aginst people coming over the border ILLEGALLY. I could stop it, if they let me.
Play Ball. Let's keep it clean. No retaliating against Dodgers fans in San Francisco. Show them we are bigger than that.

Over a baseball game???!! Seriously either alcohol has to stopped being sold or watered down so it is impossible to get drunk.

Name calling is bad enough. ENOUGH PEOPLE its a game. If they can't be civil get rid of the teams.

this sucks i been a dodger fan since the 70s going to the game as akid and this would of never happend back then these thugs are making the team and the real and good fans look bad i hope they catch these thugs and make an example out of them STAY OUT OF OUR STADIUM THUGS...

Giants have a good team as well as dodgers...its a sport for crying out loud...family time...leave the school yard antics at home....what a bunch of losers trying to ruin everyone elses day taking it too seriously.

I quit going to Dodger games a few years ago. Last time I went my friend was a victim of a hit and run in the parking lot. I called security they did a terrible job and the driver got away. With all the backed up traffic getting out of Dodger Stadium it would've been so easy for security to stand at every exit and catch the driver. My friend was out cold on the ground and suffered a serious injury to his leg which he will never fully recover from.

This might be unpopular here, but I have could understand this. I only have a problem with everyone's trash talking about the situation. It is very well known that my Dodgers and the giants are rivals. It's known that passionate people's testosterone gets flowing in a major way in times of excitement, mix in a little intoxication, and things like this are bound to happend.I'm not saying I'd join these guys and start beating opposing fans, I'm saying why are people so shocked. Our ancestors use to be savages, and whether people like it or not, we're animals, mamals to be precise, no matter how bad most people want to deny it or seperate humans from other creatures of this earth,we're anamils and sometimes animals get wild. For those people that are complaining about more securit, I'm sure they'll take volenteers....that's if you're really that bothered about it, because if I was truly bothered by something and had an opportunity to be hands on in addressing it, I'd be right there.

Oh, and one more thing, people should'nt act like this only happens in L.A. And my this individual in the hospital have a speedy recovery, best wishes to him and his family.

I have been a Dodger fan since the mid 50's and I have noticed a huge change in the fan base since the Raider's left town. I have reached my limit and will toss my LA hat today and purchase a SF hat. No more LA Dodger for me

Hey glen, the scum of LA love violence. They just happen to be at a sports venue in order to drink and get stupid.

I am a huge Dodger fan, have been all my life. Born and raise in East Los Angeles and yes I have a full head of hair, no tatoos and I make a healthy six digit income.

You need to stop taking everything you hear in the news literally.

I still don't think Dodgers fans are as bad as Raiders fans and Northeastern sports fans. At least Dodgers fans only act like this towards Giants fans and maybe Angels fans. Raiders fans and Northeastern sports fans will treat any visiting teams fans like crap (even if it's fans of a team that have no rivalry with their team whatsoever).

It is the loud, foul mouth, macho, gang banger (or want to be gang banger) who have taken over Dodger Stadium (and other places like the Santa Monica pier). I have not been to a Dodger game in six yrs for that very reason. I started to go to Dodger games in the 60’s when my family moved to California from New Jersey. We now have an under-culture in the USA who do not respect authority, are uneducated and who treat our cities like toilets with their filth and graffiti. In California they are thugs who have the La Virgen de Guadalupe tattooed on their back but will put a bullet in your head for looking at them the wrong way or shoot a cop for pulling them over for a traffic violation. How much you want to bet that these two worthless scum bags are hiding out in Mexico with grandma and grandpa. I know that all decent human beings are asking for God to bless the victim and his family. Man up McCourt and help out this family financially!

I would sue the Dodgers. They are responsible for supplying security.
The only thing Pro teams understand is money. Nice of the Giants to proivde the lineup card for the day. Now the guy gets to remember the day he got sucker punched every time he looks at the card. Sue the team and collect some money. Then LA Dodgers ownership will wake up to the fact they must provide security if they are going to charge people to park on private property.

Its really sad that you cant go to a sporting event anymore and just enjoy the game. You have to fear for your safety. La Dodger fans have proved that they are the most immature filthy fans in MLB. And I am a die hard Giants and Raider fan and I go to a lot of Raider games and I have NEVER seen people that are fans of the other teams get attacked by Raider fans... EVER. Good job LA... your fans have the worst sportsmanship in MLB

I believe that the people that soley criticize all the Dodger fans because of these accidents are stupid. Yes I do agree that the Dodger Stadium should have more vigilance so that things like this don't happen, and if they do we could catch the attackers. Nobody really knows what happened and I dont want my words to be mistaken and twisted into me saying that its justifiable but we should wait until we have all the facts. It's ridiculous to judge someone just because they like baseball and have a team to root for. I guess the words of Martin Luther King JR still haven't yet met their mission.

I am a huge dodger fan but this is UNACCEPTABLE!!! On so many levels. My question is...has any member of the Dodger team come out and said that this is not right? If not...why hasnt anyone from the team said something. Fans...TRUE FANS DO NOT ACT LIKE THIS!!!!

This is not a surprise because most of the Fans are all gang members and think that to earn respect you have to beat the living guts out of them. Last time I checked that’s the last thing you want to do in a regular stadium but no, in LA that how we do it, it's so stupid.
And I have a question, were are the police when you need them, or are they just drinking on the security floor like the rest of them. How much you want to bet that some one is going to get killed then the security will step up a bit. So retarded and gay.

Poor guy! here's my 2 cents:

"People love to disagree so avoid the endless bout make no attempt
To try and suss the stupid out
But of the racist institutions simple minds belong
Not happy just being human, no wish to get along
Little people need exclusions sucker groups to throng
It makes them feel special it makes them feel strong
Now I got a click but it's more like a family
Not an ethnic trip more like an ethic see
I write the rhyme today tell it to you later
Whether were coming in wack or what it's a waste to be a hater"
