Chula Vista burglary suspect fatally shot by guard was a paroled gang member

The burglary suspect killed Monday morning in a shootout with a security guard at a Chula Vista shopping center was identified Tuesday as an ex-convict and documented gang member.

Alex Somphonh Choulamontry, 23, had convictions for theft, possession of drugs, drunk driving and falsely identifying himself to a police officer. He was on parole, Chula Vista police said.

Choulamontry was fatally shot by a security guard at the Otay Ranch Mall in Chula Vista. He and two others had attempted to break into the closed mall and steal items from the Apple store.

The two other suspects were arrested within minutes of the attempted "smash and grab" burglary.

Cheers to the security guard. That's a tough job. Glad he wasn't injured in the gunfight.

This is getting better by the minute....what a fantastic job by that security guard!

Just what the world needs: MORE DEAD GANG-BANGERS! I wish this could occur more often! It will send a message to the other punks!

National hero!
