Bear cub found rummaging in trash fatally shot

A bear cub was shot and killed Thursday by a Forest Falls resident who found it rummaging through the trash, authorities said.

The cub was in the resident's driveway when it was shot about 2 a.m., said Jodi Miller, a spokeswoman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

No one was arrested, Miller said.

Sheriff’s officials notified the state Department of Fish and Game, which is handling the investigation.

What a sad story. The cub was killed for rummaging through garbage? What's wrong with people? Why didn't this trigger-happy jerk pick up the phone and call someone so the cub could have been removed from the location?

Why ?
Was the baby bear a threat to the guy with a gun? was the guy hunting bear in his drive way ?Can you just go and discharge a fire arm on any animal in your drive way ?

So what was the justification for the shooting?

Seems more like poaching to me.

Wow. This clown really had to shoot the cub? What was the danger? Also, this idiot decided to move to forest falls=you may have a bear/wild-life... It's not like the cub jumped out of nowhere while he was walking in the mall. This story gets me soooo mad.

why wasn't he arrested? makes you proud to be a human: not

Takes a really, really small person to shoot a bear cub. If Teddy Roosevelt were still alive he'd probably shoot the guy.

It's lousy that a simple creature gets shot just for following its nature. I honestly hope the shooter feels remorse when he or she realizes that honking a car horn or making a loud sound would have chased the cub away. I live in an area where bear, deer and coyotes visit. Humans are scaries than all of them put together!

Disgusting. The poor bear was hungry, why didn't the tough guy call wildlife to have the baby relocated? Humans are a disgrace to the planet - as if we haven't done enough damage as it is.

Mama Bear and her friends will come for this freakin idiot!

That idiot should be arrested and fined. His life was not in any danger, the idiot could have gone back into his house and then later in the day he could have secured the garbage cans so that a hungry bear cub would be discouraged from rummaging. The LAT needs to follow up with this and print the what was the resulting determination from the investigation.

Trash should always be well secured, to keep wildlife away. Even in the suburbs we have opossums and raccoons etc. This guy should be sited for keeping his trash unsecured as well as shooting wildlife. How sad, how awful.

This is disgusting! This homeowner should be prosecuted for killing this baby bear!

I hope they check to see if he was in legal possesion of that weapon and charge him with whatever they can.

There was no need for him to kill that baby bear....he could have easily called 911 and had the authorities collect him and take him back to his home.

Why is this a surprise, Bears and Cubs shot in Los Angeles.

Just wear a Giants jersey to Doyer Stadium and see what happens.

One less bear in this world is a good thing. Keep on shooting! Keep the bear population in check.

The cub posed a clear and present danger to the resident? I think not.

It takes a real man to should an infant animal.

This is no worse than the San Bernardino jewelery store owner who shot at robbers two weeks ago, AS THEY WERE DRIVING AWAY.

The bear was not a "cub" it was over a year old and close to 100 pounds. They arent scared of people and couldnt be scared or run off, because uppity tourists like to visit and feed the bears. I am resident of the town it happened in and for once could the damn LA times get off its leftist agenda and report the truth rather then make it seem like the animal was defenseless and not acting in a threatening manner.

way to go human being. nice display of restraint and love and tolerance.... the only thing making me feel better is that so many agree: you (shooter) are an idot!

To vague of a story. Why print it without more facts. Was the person endangered? Were small children involved? Why doesn't the article talk about how much damage a yearling bear can do. I find this kind of reporting very disturbing.

I sure hope the neighborhood children don't play anywhere near this guys house. .

He wasn't arrested because he's a white, beer drinkin, mustache wearin' cowboy!!! So were the Officers who responded to the call. They let him slide with a "Nice Kill there Buddy."

Why couldn't this trigger happy, murderous fool just shoot in the air or throw something at the baby bear? I've been to that area and I know that there is a lot of wildlife roaming about... Just visiting I knew to expect this!! And to actually live there and come out gun blazing is utterly ridiculous! I hate you people!!

It is a felony crime to discharge a fire arm inside the City limits.

Tragic how some fool with a gun feels like it's his right to "protect" his property any given opportunity. Poor little guy. His as* should be tossed in jail for animal cruelty. What was his reason???? Cub made a mess and that made him mad? Sometimes i don't understand how people can be so cruel to animals, especially baby animals.

WOW that is rediculous, he needs to be arrested. this was at 2 a.m.!! just go back to sleep, there is no threat there. I hope mama bear mauls this guy down.

You would think people move to Forrest Falls because they enjoy the nature
