Attack outside Costa Mesa nightclub leaves Marine critically injured
A Marine remained in critical condition at Western Medical Center after he and a friend were assaulted in the parking lot of Sutra Lounge in Triangle Square shopping center in Costa Mesa.
Alex Martinez, 21, was struck in the head early Sunday morning, allegedly by Mark Allen Vasquez, 24, of Pico Rivera, according to Costa Mesa police.
Martinez's head then hit the floor of the fourth-floor parking structure and he went unconscious. His friend, Victor Zavela, 21, was also hit but did not sustain serious injuries.
Martinez and Zavela had left Sutra and were waiting for someone to pick them up, according to police. A verbal dispute began with two other men, Vasquez and John Vela, 25, of Whittier.
