Large water spout erupts on Beverly Hills street
Morning commuters had a cityside version of Old Faithful on Thursday near the intersection of Wilshire and Robertson boulevards in Beverly Hills.
Water was shooting higher than nearby buildings. Workers in head-to-toe orange rain gear were working to stop the flow.
Traffic was still able to get through although the commute was slow and soggy.
A Department of Water and Power spokesperson was trying to track down information on the source of the problem.
As of 10:40 Thursday, the gusher had been capped. There was no apparent flooding.

Um, technically, isn't a "water spout" a type of tornado that only occurs over open water?
I'm guessing the Beverly Hills event could be more accurately described as a "water gusher" or something like that.

This is not a water spout, which a tornado over water.

Isn't a waterspout a tornado over a body of water, that results in a columnar vortex of water? This is more akin to a geyser.

Ummm, a "water spout" is a tornado over water, not a ruptured water line.

But, if the bi-line said "fire hydrant ruptured in Beverly Hills" no one would care!!

Yes, a water spout is all those things, but isn't anyone curious as to what caused this to happen? Why no update yet?
