2 killed, 3 injured as carjacked truck collides with vehicles in Coronado

March 3, 2011 |  1:19 pm

Two people were killed and three injured Thursday morning when a pickup truck believed hijacked in Imperial Beach collided with other vehicles along the Silver Strand in Coronado during a high-speed pursuit by a sheriff's patrol car, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said.

The two dead were in the truck -- although it is not clear whether the passenger was a victim of the carjacking or an accomplice, the Sheriff's Department said.

An initial report is that a knife-wielding woman hijacked the truck at about 7:45 a.m. and that the male passenger was one of the truck's owners. Both driver and passenger were killed in the crash.

In attempting to evade the sheriff's car, the truck sideswiped six cars and then flipped over, bursting into flames.
