Tsunami: Dramatic video model of wave's path appears accurate
Forecasters from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said the model predicting the path of the tsunami appears to be validated by preliminary data collected. The model, which uses estimates from early tsunami waves and other data, generated the expected speed, force and path of the tsumani caused by the 8.9 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Japan.
So far, measurements taken from buoys strategically stationed around the world align with predictions made by scientists at the NOAA Center for Tsunami Research in Washington.
In the video above, in the graphs below the animation the blue line shows what scientists have observed in data collected from the buoys; the red line indicates what the model predicted.
"Observations validate the model, which gives us more confidence," said Jana Goldman, a NOAA spokeswoman.
Such models play a "critical role" in tsunami forecasting and are used to create warnings and advisories for affected areas.
