San Diego motorcycle officer hospitalized after collision on his way to work

A San Diego Police Department motorcycle officer was hospitalized with serious injuries after being in a traffic collision on his way to work, officials said Wednesday.

Officer Bryce Byrd was in uniform and riding his police motorcycle to work from his home in suburban San Marcos around 6 a.m. when the accident occured, authorities said. The driver of the car involved in the collision remained at the scene as Byrd was taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido.

Initial indications were that Byrd suffered a leg fracture below the knee, a dislocated hip and a hand injury.

The accident was under investigation by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, which patrols San Marcos. Byrd, 47, has been with the San Diego department for 19 years.
