Rancho Cucamonga business owner sentenced for hiring illegal immigrants

A Rancho Cucamonga furniture company owner was sentenced to 10 months in federal prison for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants, federal officials said Tuesday.

Rick M. Vartanian, 57, of Ladera Ranch, had been convicted of obstruction of justice and employing illegal immigrants at his company, Brownwood Furniture.

Along with the prison sentence, U.S. District Judge Gary Fees on Monday also ordered Vartanian to pay a $15,000 fine.

In November 2009, officials said, Vartanian told investigators with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that unauthorized workers identified during an earlier audit were no longer employed by the company.

In fact, Vartanian had kept 18 of those workers on his payroll and was concealing their employment, according to federal officials, who said the investigation began when the immigration agency received an anonymous tip that Brownwood Furniture had hired the illegal workers.

A federal audit of the company's personnel in 2009 found that 61 of the firm's 73 employees had submitted invalid documents to obtain their jobs, officials said.

"As these sentences make clear, employers who knowingly hire unauthorized workers face serious consequences," Claude Arnold, special agent in charge for ICE Homeland Security investigations in Los Angeles, said in a statement.

Brownwood Furniture's vice president, Michael Patrick Eberly, 48, of Alta Loma, also pleaded guilty to one count of employing unauthorized workers.

He was sentenced to one year of probation and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine.

This is a good first step at real immigration reform. However, big business is never going to let this ride. Trust me, republicans are going to flip if enough business men are hit.

Finally I.C.E. took a step in the right direction. If the Feds. start enforceing the law ,and go after the folks that EMPLOY the illegals, and put them in jail ,,,,problem solved....The jobs would go to our citizens, and watch how it will improve our JOBLESS RATE.People from Mexico and other countries would stay home and deal by force if they have to with their CORRUPT GOVERNMENTS.We should not be Mexico's CASH COW,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

The real problem are the borders. When you fire illegal workers with families, their US born children will qualify for government assistance. Of course not all them will have children if they do, it will further deepen our financial crisis. We need to secure our borders and stop giving birth rights citizenship to their kids.

We need more of these publicized prosecutions.

61 out of 73 employees using fraudulent documents is more than a coincidence, not to mention lying about having dealt with the problem.

I wish the story included how much these people were being paid.

It;s a start and we will be seeing a lot more of this as this country falls deeper into debt and these greedy business owners continue to hire illegal workers!

Good Job!!

Always good news, let it be known, if you hire illegal aliens you face federal prison time.

Gwl: The way to stop them from getting benefits through their children is to make it a law that both parents must be U.S. Citizens for the child to qualify.

What about all the politicians that hire illegal nannies and house keepers. They get away with stealing money from tax payers and hire illegals. They should be prosecuted like any other business man hiring illegals. But it seems like if have a government job or money, you are above the law. No wonder this country is going down the toilet.

I see jobs for AMERICANS in our FUTURE SOON

Wow - what a dent made by government federal workers!

You only have 10 million more to go. THEN get your pensions you parasites.

This is what we should be doing if we want to stop illegal immigration. If they can't get jobs, they won't come.

Now we just need to change the law so the government can seize businesses like this guys' and sell it to the highest bidder and then use that money to further enforcement.

Get's results whereas slinging racial and ethnic slurs do not. Probably means the Republicans won't support it as they like to promote fear and hatred, it's all they have left since all their policies have failed.

this business owner should have moved his business to CHINA like SO MANY other business owners are doing. business owners should be able hire whomever they want. the government should not get involved. that's what REPUBLICANS believe in, que no?

They ought to raid several thousand McDonalds, Burger Kings, Taco Bells and hotels across the country. Send the owners to jail and fine the hell out of them.

If we are serious , we can minimize the " maintainance" in our School (sorry kids-for parents who came here at the back door), Jail, Housing, by checking the people who are inside. Our police have to check their I.D. for violators. Sorry for this illegals including their kids, they should be turn over to the Federal Gov't for Judgement.

GOOD!!!! Hope the illegals were sent back over the border!!!

I like it!!!

Furniture from China better anyways.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS GOVERNMENT AND THIS PICTURE, HERE THE UNITED STATES WHO BY THE WAY IS NO LONGER THE GREAT COUNTRY THAT EVERYONE ONCE THOUGHT THAT IT WAS, HERE THEY CAN MAKE A LOT OF MONEY BY IMMIGRATING THOSE PEOPLE WHO ARE GOOD CITIZENS AND HAVE BEEN IN THIS COUNTRY AT LEAST 10 YEARS, WHAT IS WRONG WITH THAT, THIS COUNTRY IS IN SO MUCH TROUBLE MONEY WISE THAT WE WILL NEVER PAY OUR DEBT BACK TO CHINA, NOT IN A MILLION YEARS. OUR GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO WAKE UP AND SMELL THE COFFEE LITERALLY, WHAT'S WRONG WITH THIS COUNTRY IS THAT IN THIS DAY AND AGE THERE IS STILL SO MUCH DISCRIMINATION AND ONLY AGAINST MEXICANS, BECAUSE WE ARE SEPERATE FROM HISPANICS, WE ARE NOT FROM GUATEMALA OR EL SALVADOR OR CUBA OR ANT OF THOSE OTHER COUNTRIES SOUTH OF MEXICO WE ARE FROM MEXICO. IF THE GOVERNMENT WOULD ONLY LISTEN TO US

It's amazing how many ignorant people just don't get it,,,This is not a Republican or a Democrat issue,It's about the survival of the American way of life.We need the jobs that individuals like Rick M.Vartanian ,thru greed hires illegal aliens, and for all you bleeding hearts. What part of "ILLEGAL" do you fail to understand???????? They need to go back to their country and say "SI SE PUEDE" they use that term here.Go after all the taco joints, car washes, hotels,SEND THEM BACK. We need the jobs

The LA Times never used E-Verify before and thus had to be employing illegal aliens. And now??

I have to agree with gwl!! we need to do away with anchor baby citizenship... those babies are nothing more than the bi product of a crime regardless of what side of the bored it was conceived on!!!!

Why single him out? Everybody's doing it! ICE is so inconsistent!

Do they have any current job openings?

You people need to contact your local social service office to learn just how many services these "anchor babies" are qualified for. In our state the parents of an "anchor baby" receive about $17 a month in food stamps and there's a cap to that qualification. Please keep in mind that you came from somewhere else and that your family's beginings were humble. I don't know of too many Americans that are fighting for the jobs the illegals take gladly. Washing cars, bus boys, dish washers, field workers etc are not what Americans like to do. The beggars I see standing at Walmart corners aren't flipping burgers at McDonald's.

Hiring illegal immigrants is against the law but unfortunately, too many businesses favor these laborers because they are cheaper and won't likely complain about labor law violations unlike American employees. It's good to know though that the employers, or at least, one of them like the Rancho Cucamonga owner is being held accountable for it. These illegal immigrant workers also work under terrible conditions so steps such as this, is one way of helping both employees and the industry.

AMERICANS don't want these kind of jobs...that's why employers hire "Unauthorize Aliens" to do the work!!
BTW..."Illegal Aliens" is not the correct term...you can get sued!
