Police arrest knife-wielding man at Staples Center

March 19, 2011 | 12:40 pm

A man armed with a knife was taken into custody Saturday morning after a standoff with police at Staples Center just prior to a scheduled basketball game.

At about 11 a.m. the Los Angeles Police Department received a report of a man armed with a knife at the arena, said officer Norma Eisenman of the Los Angeles Police Department. The suspect was taken into custody, she added.

According to an Associated Press report, the man was taken into custody after a brief standoff with police on the basketball court. Spectators were filing inside the arena for the 12:30 p.m. game between the Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Cavaliers when the standoff occurred. It was not known if the players were on the court at the time of the standoff.

Eisenman said she could not confirm the Associated Press account, but said that no one was evacuated from Staples Center during the incident.
