Orange County man who beat mother with shovel faces murder charges

March 16, 2011 |  7:31 am

A Fountain Valley man imprisoned for beating his mother with a shovel is expected to be arraigned Wednesday on murder charges after she died from her injuries.

Robert Lawrence Char pleaded guilty in July to one felony count of attempted murder, elder and dependent abuse and other charges and was sentenced to nine years in state prison.

Orange County prosecutors said Char repeatedly beat his 74-year-old mother on the head with a shovel following an argument over housework.

Joyce Char was hospitalized and unresponsive until her death in December, prosecutors said.

Char was charged with murder in February and returned to Orange County from Vacaville State Prison. He is expected to be arraigned at Men's Central Jail.
