Police follow trail of blood to Hayward Hotel in downtown jewelry store robbery [Updated]
Los Angeles police Thursday night followed a trail of blood to the downtown Hayward Hotel as they searched for a man in an attempted robbery of a nearby jewelry repair store.
Officers were searching the hotel in 600 of block of South Spring Street and had cordoned off a two-block area, said Officer Sara Faden of the Los Angeles Police Department.
She said two suspects were apprehended after getting into a scuffle with the store owner. One of the suspects, she said, "had an injury that resembled a stab wound."
The three attackers entered the store in the 600 block of South Broadway about 6:15 p.m.
A scuffle broke out, and the owner wrestled a handgun from one of the suspects. Police responded after a receiving a report of shots fired.
Security guards inside the building heard the fighting and ran into the store, which is on the third floor, and joined the altercation, according to Faden.
[Updated 10:44 p.m.: The suspect was still at large, the LAPD said, and officers opened up streets that had been closed.]
