Authorities arrest technician accused of raping patient at St. Joseph Hospital in Orange
Francisco Ayala Jr. of Anaheim, 27, was arrested about 6:30 p.m. following an interview with Orange Police Department investigators, according to Orange Police Sgt. Dan Adams.
“We will not release what his statement was at this time,” Adams said. “But based on the totality of our investigation we were able to arrest him on the alleged charges.”
Ayala was arrested on suspicion of rape, sodomy and oral copulation and booked into the Orange County jail, he said.
The patient was seeking treatment in the emergency room when Ayala, a patient care technician assigned to monitor her, allegedly assaulted her, Adams said.
The next day, the woman told hospital officials that a patient care technician had assaulted her. Officials then reported the incident to police, he said.
As of Tuesday, authorities had not interviewed Ayala.
Adams told The Times earlier this week that a patrol officer took reports from the hospital and the patient and filed the paperwork Thursday. But the detective bureau is generally closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday unless there is a major case like a murder, he said, and on Monday all of the department's detectives were investigating a homicide.
"The time line is very normal for an investigation like this," Adams said Tuesday.
An official with the state Department of Public Health said the agency also has opened an investigation but declined to provide further details.
