Off-duty officer shot at while driving on Harbor Freeway

March 10, 2011 | 11:13 pm

An off-duty Los Angeles police officer escaped injury Thursday evening when a gunman opened fire on him as he traveled south on the Harbor Freeway near Century Boulevard.

Two shots were fired, with one shattering the windshield of the officer’s personal car, a police spokeswoman said. The incident occurred about 8:45 p.m.

Authorities said the officer returned fire, although it was unknown whether the assailant’s vehicle -- described as an older Toyota pickup truck -- was struck.

The officer was not in uniform and there was no indication that he was specifically targeted, the spokeswoman said.

The California Highway Patrol closed portions of the freeway as officers searched for evidence.
