Small earthquake rattles Big Bear City

A magnitude 3.1 earthquake struck the mountains four miles north of Big Bear City on Thursday afternoon, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake struck at 4:34 p.m. deep on the northern edge of the San Bernardino Mountains near California 18. The quake was followed by a magnitude 2.2 aftershock one minute later.

Shaking was light to moderate, according to the USGS.

The San Andreas fault runs underneath the San Bernardino Mountains.
