West High in Torrance wins L.A. County Academic Decathlon
West High School in Torrance has won the Los Angeles County Academic Decathlon for the third consecutive year, county education officials said Thursday.
The team tallied 44,467 points out of a possible 60,000. West now advances to the California Academic Decathlon next month in Sacramento. Seven other teams in the local competition also will advance because their scores were high enough to qualify.
In order of finish, the other top teams were: Mark Keppel High in Alhambra; Alhambra High; Torrance High; Burbank High; El Rancho High in Pico Rivera; South High in Torrance, and West Ranch High in Stevenson Ranch.
The study theme for this year’s competition was the Great Depression. The contest took place Jan. 29 at El Rancho High School and Feb. 5 at USC's Galen Center. This decathlon was open to Los Angeles County public high schools that are outside of the Los Angeles Unified School District, which has its own competition.
The top-scoring student was Shao Yi Qian of Alhambra, a senior. The next-highest scores were achieved by Aaron Cheng, a senior from West, and Lisa Beckman, a junior, also from West.
Lancaster High was the most improved school.
