UC San Diego reacts to racially offensive e-mail

UC San Diego administrators have condemned an Internet prankster who sent out a racially offensive e-mail earlier this month, but they declined to publicly identify the student or say whether any disciplinary action was taken.

After receiving a campuswide e-mail about a student survey, someone took advantage of a "reply to all" button that should not have been on the message, campus officials said.

The officials did not respond to questions about the specific content of the message, other than to describe it as "grossly inappropriate." According to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune, the person sent out a one-word message containing a common anti-black epithet.

The action upset African American students who were outraged last year by several racially tinged incidents, including an off-campus party that mocked Black History Month.

In a statement released Friday, UC San Diego's administration said: "We sincerely regret that a single individual was given the ability to send out a hurtful and offensive email, and we have taken steps to ensure that this does not occur in the future."

The message said the campus is "resolute in our determination to ensure a safe and just environment in which everyone may live, work, learn and flourish."

As an African American I am absolutely OUTRAGED at the pervasive racism in the whitey community.

LOL ---the sender of the list is to blame, not the person replying!

And everything is offensive to someone; esp the blacks at UCSD.

Thats sad maybe everyone needs to take a little something from a local singer in San Diego who writes in his song The Sound "Love is the final Fight"

the "whitey" community? sounds a bit racist to me.

and one email is not "pervasive".

also: i watch black comedians all the time on TV, and they love to make fun of white people. as a white person, I am not offended. Race is fair game for humor -- and it cuts both ways. In this country, you can make fun of whites, blacks, gays, straights, hispanics, Asians, Muslims, Jews, Christians -- anyone you want. there are no special "hands off" rules for black people. If there were special rules for talking about blacks only, then THAT would be racist.

Without the content of the e-mails, this story is a 100% waste of time.

"According to a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune, the person sent out a one-word message containing a common anti-black epithet."

Which one?

"The officials did not respond to questions about the specific content of the message, other than to describe it as "grossly inappropriate."

I'm supposed to trust un-named "officials"?

Fire this non-reporter for wasting my time.

I am OUTRAGED by Nyalls comment! The "whitey" comment is not "a bit racist" it is totally racist. What makes him think the email was sent by whitey? Hey Nyalls, not all racists are white, tale a look in the mirror.

Major - how do you know that African American students at UCSD are overly sensitive?

Racism is hurtful no matter which group is being talked about. And Mo, sure comedy is a special genre, but for a person to spread hate to an entire campus - surely you can't be defending that.

Word of advice: get over it.

In the real world, you won't have some black student union holding your hand through the tough times.

hahaha everyone is taking it way to seriously. it was just someone messing around and taking advantage of a mistake.

The bottom line is that something is terribly wrong at UCSD.
