Santa Monica man dies in apparent car race

A 23-year-old man died early Saturday morning in an apparent illegal car race along Wilshire Boulevard in Santa Monica, according to police.

The incident occurred at 3 a.m. in the 2000 block of Wilshire Boulevard. The driver who died, a Santa Monica resident, lost control of his vehicle and struck a tree, police said.

Officers located the other vehicle later in the morning; it was unoccupied.  The investigation continues.
