Ontario mother kills 11-year-old son with a hammer before taking her own life

A mother facing eviction used a hammer to bludgeon her 11-year-old son to death before committing suicide by slitting her throat Friday night, San Bernardino County authorities said.

The bodies of Eddie Lopez and his 41-year-old mother Libia Lopez were found inside an Ontario shed by police around 8 p.m. after a neighbor reported seeing a dead woman, coroner’s officials said.

The boy was  beaten with a hammer and the mother cut her throat after failing to overdose on anti-depressants, investigators said.

A motive has yet to be determined, but police noted that the woman and her son were both facing eviction.

This is sooooo sad. How could anyone with a heart take their own child's life?

How horrible. Seems we're hearing more and more about these family murder/suicides. What is wrong these days that people can't seem to cope with stress better? I was a divorced mom and yes times got hard but never in a gazillion years would I had ever dreamed of harming my child, let alone myself. We need to find the resources to get more mental health assistance out there to prevent these horrible things from happening.

woman was just crazy and needed mental psychiatric help

Antidepressants. Could it be a factor? There seem to be new ones monthly. Are they really for all of the non-institutionalized?

This is sad, but the current or past President have nothing to do with it.

I thought these posts were being moderated?

It's Sarah Palin's fault!

No, it's Obama's fault!

No no, it's Bush's fault!

No - Rachel Maddow's fault!

- evidence of the decline of critical thinking

Why, oh why, don't these parents just kill themselves first? Why must they always take their kids too?

If this is true, they need to better moderate the Homicide Report because people leave very hurtful things on their that upset the bereaved families. I am not talking about people who know the deceased personally, but people who go to the report weekly to be disrespectful and hurtful to those already hurting.

This is just so sad.
Would take a mother being more, far more, than distraught, depressed, mentally upset to kill her own child...and in such a cruel way. It's disheartening what is happening in the world today.

this is so sad more suicides will come and more horrible things will happen and with the economic been bad with no jobs and people loosing what little they have it is very bad....... my prayers to everyone wen ruff times comes may they believe it will pass and they can overcome their problems and think straight, god bless and guide you through...... my deepest condolences to the family and my prayers as my heart goes out to all the people that are having ruff time............. I been there and still been a single mother I know, but you can do it .... always believe that no matter what happen god is there with me and he will never abandon us .......... may you all have peace, love, joy and abundance in life..... remember money or material things can come and go but the most important thing should be a life yours and everyone, don't ever give up if you fall 3 or more times get up and stand tall u can do it it is all up to you god bless.

Why did she have to kill her own son?
She could of easily turned him over to other relatives to care for him till she got situated.

She wanted to make a statement by killing her son too. there are many people that feel left out and abandoned by society. We need to share the wealth more in our society.Make whatever excuses you want but when this stuff starts to happen in society more and more like we see now it means that we are moving in the wrong direction. How many of us really care to make changes so that this does not happen again?

No one has the right to judge. Nobody but God knows the state of mind that she was in. Some of us our weaker than others and maybe no one offered to help. Again....no one knows what she was going through and no one has the right to judge. I just hope that if any one ever feels the same, please reach out to some one. Everything has answer...be strong and have faith.
