Funeral service for firefighter who died in house blaze to be held Friday

Glenn Allen, 61 Funeral services for a Los Angeles firefighter fatally injured when a ceiling collapsed on him during a house fire in the Hollywood Hills are scheduled for Friday at Cathedral of Our Lady of Angels in Los Angeles, officials said.

Glenn Allen, 61 and about a year away from retirement, was injured during the house fire that broke out late Wednesday in the 1500 block of North Viewsite Drive, officials said. He died at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Friday afternoon, officials said.

His daughter gave birth on Saturday night to what would have been his first grandson, officials said.

Allen was among six firefighters injured when a water-saturated ceiling collapsed on them during the blaze. A plastic line in the home's sprinkler system apparently burned through and filled the ceiling with water, fire officials said.

The other firefighters were not seriously hurt. The owners of the house, who had been living there for about a week, escaped the blaze unharmed. Damage to the home was estimated at about $250,000, firefighters said.

My condolences go out to Mr. Allen's family. From what I've heard, he was an upstanding man, a devoted father and obviously a servant to his community.
