Fatal shooting near Whittier elementary school prompts lockdown at campus

One person has been fatally shot inside a Whittier home near Murphy Ranch Elementary School, which has been placed on lockdown, Whittier police said.

The shooting occurred around noon inside the home, and a special weapons team has surrounded the dwelling, police said.

The incident does not appear to pose any danger to the school in the 16000 block of Janine Drive, but the campus has been placed on lockdown as a precaution, police said.

No other information was immediately available about the victim or what prompted the shooting.

This is normally a very good neighborhood. I hope the family is okay.

I live a couple hundred yards away from that home (as the crow flies). I just heard what sounded like an explosion coming from that direction a few minutes ago (~6:30pm)
