Man who allegedly dismembered mother, stuffed her in freezer is charged with murder

February 9, 2011 |  8:29 am

A Maywood man was formally charged Tuesday with killing his mother, cutting her up with a saw and stuffing her in a freezer, while later in the day family members held a vigil for the victim.

Moises Meraz-Espinoza was charged with one count of murder. He did not enter a plea in court.

According to L.A. County Sheriff's Department officials, Meraz-Espinoza confessed to killing his mother in her Maywood apartment. A motive is unclear, but family members told KTLA News that he had been depressed since his girlfriend died several months ago.

Family members told the station at a vigil that the mother had been asphyxiated. At the vigil, family and friends remembered Amelia Espinoza as a kind person and caring mother.

Moises Meraz-Espinoza apparently walked into a Huntington Park police station Friday afternoon and told authorities there that he had killed someone and that the body was inside an apartment in the 5600 block of Maywood Avenue.
