Deputy stabbed, suspect shot in East L.A. altercation [Updated]

An off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was stabbed and a suspect hit by gunfire early Saturday during an altercation in East L.A.

The condition of the deputy was not immediately known, but officials said he was taken to a hospital to be treated.

[Updated at 9:36 a.m.: According to the Sheriff's Department, "The off-duty deputy was stabbed and is now listed in stable condition at the hospital. The suspect is now listed in critical condition."]

The incident occurred about 4 a.m. in the 4500 block of East Third Street. The deputy and the suspect got into some type of altercation, officials said, but details were unavailable.

In January, another deputy was seriously wounded in a shooting in nearby City Terrace.

I'm glad to hear dirtbags being taken care of when officers are off-duty, as well as on-duty. There have been a lot of off-duty shootings accross the country, and unfortunately the police don't always win. God bless our those who look after our safety...

as I understand the video at the King Taco can reveal what happened in this case for the record, there maybe some existing copies, lets just wait and see what LASD state first? we do not need gun carrying police off the job and use for very negligent manner? especially when drinking alcohol, the 2-do not mix well??

John, don't make me puke. Cops are not there to look after your safety they are simply government enforcers.

That deputy needs to spend more time on the shooting range....he left the suspect alive! If a cop pulls his gun and shoots he needs to kill the bad guy....one less bad guy on the street....If the cops keep shootin' pretty soon there will be no more bad guys out there....no more grafitti, no more drug dealers, no more robbers, no more assaults, no more rapists, no more drunk drivers, no more skin heads, no more gang bangers! Come'on cops and deputies, shoot straight!!!!!!

What is a police officer doing out at 3 or 4 in the morning off duty???

I bet he was drinking or at a party. I hope they test him for alcohol or drugs!!!

It a slippery slope having legally armed people out all night partying.

Officers should be forced to leave their firearms at the station when they clock out. Period.

Glad to hear the deputy is recovering.

Law Enforcement = 1 Scumbags = 0

Another Officer-involved shooting in east LA; time for the libtards to scream what a bad cop he is for not letting the suspect kill him.

Good job, Deputy, don;t let the ACLU and the liberal dictate your decision making. The majority of Californians are here to back you.

Next time lets put Ramona Ripson out there to quail a gang altercation.. Lets see if she can do that,

Just because you can legally carry a gun does not allow you to start trouble in our neighborhood, even if someone is carrying a weapon. There are a lot of people who carry weapons -- some are responsible, and some are not. Right now, it looks like two irresponsibles are off the street, and ISD will determine whether charges will be filed against the off-duty cop.

wouldnt surprise me if the cop started the " altercation " just to justify shooting someone.....

looks like john is a dirtbag

awww boohooo, go eat a donut and quit crying

@deadcolonywalking. U obviously don't know what the word ORDER means. Your inability to understand the job of a police officer will only hurt you in life. If that was no police, there would be no order!

U think your bad behind a computer? Lets see what you got? Take a walk tonight @ 103rd Street & Avalon and tell me who is calling for the Police to watch their back... YOU SON!!

2 shots to the chest and 1 to the head!

"wouldnt surprise me if the cop started the " altercation " just to justify shooting someone...."

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that the scumbag probably stabbed the deputy BEFORE he got shot......
And for you liberal a-holes that think the cops should leave their weapons at the station......what planet are you living on? The scum that runs wild in the street don't leave the weapons home...some of you should do a ride along before you post these stupid comments...

hey..the dirtbag only had a cell phone...the deputy used his throwdown knife and stabbed himself to justify his actions....where are all the crybaby libs with their che shirts ???

there's something funny here, was the cop given an alcohol test, I'll bet he wasn't!!

hmm lets see so a drunk cop get into an altercation with some guy gets stabbed and shoots the guy huh........ how do we know the off duty cop didnt pull the gun first? and the "suspect" was defending himself? we need the whole story! cops and the media never tell the truth!

dear covert ops, you're reading too many comic books, you also need to go back to the fourth grade and learn some grammar!!

way to go bigbadwolf!!! Yeah let them keep shooting people... with any luck they will get to you soon!!! There have been MORE than enough murders by cops throughout Ca!!!! The problem is that they ALL go free!!! Enough is enough. I've worked in more than enough jails, courts, and pd's whle perforimg MY job, and let me tell you this IF youve seen the things ive seen, heard the things ive heard, you'd DEFINITLY change your opinion about cops for GOOD!!!! They're liars and lower than DIRTBAGS!!!! I have NO reason to trust a cop EVER!!!! Not to mention judges, and jailers!!!
Notice LBPD hasnt done anything to the murders of Mr Zerby? Its called STANDARD PRACTICE!!!! Murder someone and sweep it under the carpet!!!
It's time for Cowboy Justice to rein supreme in the west again!!!!

lets not forget that all law enforcement regardless of level in government are also gangs with firearms. i do not support street garbage but i also know that not all law enforcing cops are honest.

I am surprised that some of you cop haters can even read. Did it ever occur to any of you to wait until we get all the facts?

Jason and Borchy,Since you have no use for armed off duty police officers,The next timeyou and your family happen to in a questional part of town and and your car fails and become surrounded by numerous scumbags ,,looking at your lady funny,,,,please don't call the police because the first respond might be an "OFF DUTY ARMED POLICE OFFICER" And how do you folks know that the officer just got off work and stopped for a bite to eat,,,,,,just maybe

everyone knows that place breads danger at 2-AM - 4AM. i could almost bet both were under the influence of at least alcohol , AND more than likely the fight was over cutting in line or over a girl. If the tape doesn't come out welllll we alllll know whats going on.
