January 10, 2011 |  8:15 am

Explosion A man's leg was severed and another man was burned Monday when a high-pressure tank exploded inside a Whittier garage, authorities said.

The 2:40 a.m. explosion in the 16000 block of Russell Street also blew off the garage door, said Lt. Carlos Solorza of the Whittier Police Department.

The two injured men, so far unidentified, were inside the garage at the time of the explosion and were taken to UC Irvine Medical Center. Their condition was unknown, Solorza said.

The blast severed the lower portion of one man's left leg and burned the lower body of the other man, Solorza said. Whittier police and Los Angeles County firefighters were on scene, he said.

"So far, we don't know what caused the explosion or what kind of gas was in the tank," Solorza said.
