Small earthquake reported near Newport Beach

Earthquake map centered at 33°N,118°W

A small earthquake was reported Thursday evening off the coast of Newport Beach.

The 2.3 temblor hit at 10:10 p.m. off the Orange County coast in the Santa Catalina Channel, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake was centered 15 miles southwest of Newport Beach and about 45 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.

It's unclear if the quake was felt on land.

An earthquake :O wow thats awful. what if theirs a stronger one?...

"... Near Newport Beach ... " Come on LA TIMES. You can do better than that for your 'headlines'. Even the Graphic has a mileage scale. It's more like 25 miles from Newport Beach. AND it was in the ocean. Your headline makes it sound like a location along 101 where some windows might have rattled. Just sayin'
