A man was fatally stabbed on Sunday during a fight at a birthday party in Pico Rivera, authorities said.

Los Angeles County Sheriff deputies responded around 12:43 a.m. to a home at the 8700 block of Bradhurst Street. Upon arriving, deputies discovered a man suffering from stab wounds, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

The man, whose name was not released, was taken by paramedics to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. His death is the first homicide of 2011 for the eight-square-mile city located in the southeastern part of Los Angeles County. At least two homicides were reported in the city last year, according to the Los Angeles Times' Homicide Report.

Authorities said the stabbing occurred shortly after a fight broke out between partygoers and 10 to 15 uninvited gang members, who were demanding entry into the party. At least one gang member fired a handgun at several people, but no one was struck, investigators said.

The gang members fled the scene in several directions after the stabbing and shooting. Authorities did not have a description of the suspects.

Anyone with information about the incident can call the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department at (323) 890-5500. Callers can also leave anonymous tips at (800) 222-TIPS (8477).

This is why cupcakes are the thing to serve. Cakes invite knives.

Why would anyone have gang bangers over to their house in the first place? What did they think would happen??

Note to self: never hold a birthday party at the zoo. The animals have access to knives.

they were uninvited gang members stupid!

10 to 15 uninvited gang members. they did not have them at the party. plus serving beer are other stuff is not a party . what happend too the good old days when partys was all about punch and soda and cake . and having the party at noon'

Gangbangers don't need to be invited to a party; the crash the parties they want to go to.

Read the story, they were uninvited.

gang members werent invited! they crashed the party and he was trying to prevent them from getting in. trying to protect the other people in the part.

i know the people nd the man was only an 18 year old person nd he did not deserve this he was the nicest guy ever R.I.P Polar Bear love you man

To: U KNOW.... Didnt you read the report before posting up a message!!! It clearly says, "UNINVITED gang members, who were DEMANDING entry into the party". They didnt expect for this to happen in a FAMILY party! So next time, before you post a message here or anywhere else, read the report first!!

u know the article said the gang members were UNINVITED.

u know: Do you not know how to read!! It clearly states uninvited gang members!!! Learn how to read they werent invited i personally know people who attended this party, he was not a gang member he just didnt want them to ruin the party so he asked them to leave!!

Sadly, it's just not safe to have a party, at night, in the city of Pico Rivera. The place is a dump, full of gangbanger losers. It's sad, but facts are facts.

I agree with "er". He was a very nice young man. Im looking at my x-mas eve '09 and new years eve '09 pictures and i seem him, and its still so unreal! Cant believe hes gone! R.I.P Polar Bear

People are so DAMN ignorant and rude! Read the article correctly. FYI: He was a really nice guy. It's unfortunate his life was taken so soon. I hope who ever did this gets their justice. RIP Polar Bear. I know my cousin misses his best friend & he will never forget you.

were they illegals?

If u are going to take the time to post a comment, first take the time to read the whole thing... They were UNINVITED and before u say something stupid take in to consideration that the family is in a lot of pain for their loss... He was a very good person in all aspects and did not deserve this... Trust me nobody would want to be in this family's place...

The problem wasn't just the uninvited gang bangers, it was the gang bangers who were invited to the party who were just as much of a problem.

Gang bangers just don't go crashing any party any where, it's not like they raid bah mitvahs, baby showers, and tupperware parties. They go where other low life thugs and gang members are. From the RIP's going out to "Polar Bear" it's safe to assume that the homie who got cut goes by a gang name.

Once again, why would anyone have gang members (invited or not) to their house anyways?

Again, notice that the Los Angeles Times neglects to identify race when reporting on a crime involving Latinos. The television networks noted in their reports that the victim and suspects are Latino.

No dummy.. His name wasn't a GANG nickname.. he's had that nick name since he was a kid.. don't assume.

yeah dumb people dont assume he was in a gang just cause of his nickname and just cause its "pico". he was a great guy. -_-

The reality is that these "gangsters" are the real terrorists of this country. They offer nothing and take everything. They are the lowest form of life and are proud of it. That young man who was murdered had nothing to do with gangs and was attending college at the time of his death. No one like him deserves to die and may he rest in peace.
