January 1, 2011 |  4:06 pm

A Dana Point man was in custody Saturday on charges of homicide and attempted homicide after a knife fight left one man dead outside the Hilton hotel in Costa Mesa early New Year's Day, police said.

The fight occurred about 2 a.m. near the valet parking area of the hotel at 3050 Bristol St. after a New Year’s party that had drawn more than 1,000 people, Costa Mesa Police Lt. Bryan Glass said.

Robert Sickles, 27, of Mission Viejo received a stab wound to the chest and was pronounced dead on arrival at Western Medical Center, police said. A second Mission Viejo man, Brian McTeigue, 26, was treated at the hospital for a stab wound to the back, but his injury was not life-threatening, authorities said.

Police said witnesses detained the suspect, 23-year-old Adam Baker. He is being held on $1-million bond.
