Robbery suspect dead, officer wounded in Garden Grove

January 27, 2011 |  7:28 am

One man is dead and a police officer is recovering from a stab wound after undercover officers from Garden Grove interrupted an alleged robbery that led to a violent confrontation and a brief pursuit.

The incident began about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night when plainclothes officers working near Garden Grove Boulevard and Galway Street “witnessed what appeared to be a robbery of a person in an alley,” according to the Garden Grove Police Department.

Officers followed a white, four-door sedan seen leaving the scene of the alleged crime, confronting the three occupants when the vehicle stopped at the intersection for a traffic light.

One suspect then grabbed and stabbed an officer. A shot was fired, according to a department release. Television news reports say the wounded officer fired at the suspect who had grabbed the officer.

A brief chase ensued that also involved patrol officers, ending at Magnolia Street and Garden Grove Boulevard. There, officers tried to resuscitate the wounded suspect, who paramedics later pronounced dead at the scene, police reported. A second suspect was treated at a hospital for a minor injury and released to police custody, joining the third suspect, who also was arrested.

The wounded officer was hospitalized and is expected to recover fully.

Anyone with information about the alleged crime or suspects is asked to contact Garden Grove police at (714) 741-5800.
