Homes evacuated after sinkhole swallows car in South Whittier

Several homes were evacuated Tuesday evening and a parked car was gobbled up by a 12-foot sinkhole in South Whittier, authorities said.

No injuries were reported after the sinkhole appeared in the 13900 block of Coteau Drive, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

It was unclear what had caused the hole, but authorities were investigating whether it was a result of the recent rainstorms that soaked the region.

No other details were available.

I live in East Whittier and there was a water main break on the private road behind my house. It was caused by all of the rains and plus the roads and pipes on that street are very old.
