South L.A. day-care center operator accused of lewd acts with a 13-year-old

A South Los Angeles day-care center operator has been arrested on suspicion of lewd acts with her godson after she was allegedly caught having sex with the 13-year-old in a van, Los Angeles police said Monday.

Chelsea Nichole McClelland, 34, was arrested Friday afternoon near Apple Street and Alsace Avenue,  just north of the Santa Monica Freeway near La Brea Avenue, police said.

McClelland, who was arrested on suspicion of multiple instances of lewd acts with a child, is being held in lieu of $400,000 bail at the Van Nuys jail. McClelland could not be reached for comment, and there was no answer at the number listed for the day-care center.

"Working cases like these involving young children is always disturbing, especially when you are a parent," said Det. Kim Porter, who heads the LAPD's West Bureau sexual assault detail.

Last week, Mid-City residents reported seeing a white van repeatedly parked in the neighorhood. Police responded Friday and discovered the boy inside the vehicle. The boy initially told them he was 18, but after being interviewed by LAPD sex crimes detectives, he acknowledged that he was 13.

McClelland owned and operated a day-care center out of her home in the 4500 block of 3rd Avenue, according to the LAPD. Police said they believe some of the illegal contact took place when the victim was 12.

McClelland has three biological children and is the legal guardian of a fourth. At the time of her arrest, she was caring for eight children at her day-care center. Police and the Child and Family Services Department looked after the children to ensure that they were probably cared for and relocated.

Lucky kid

This is sickening! I have a 13-year old son and I would slice and dice the perpretator myself if it was ever done to him. What in the hell is this world coming to? We not only have to be careful about people who prey on our daughters, but don't sleep on the sick individuals who also prey on our sons.

A 34 year old woman should be capable of finding a man of age instead of preying on a kid who has just gone through puberty. Life has consequences and now she will pay dearly for her actions...prison and lifetime offender registration.

This woman is a sick twisted individual and needs her u know what kicked!!!

Having sex with a minor is bad enough but it was her godson as well.. She is trifflin and disgusting and need's to be put in jail and throw away the key..

What was she thinking and what the hell was she doing in a van in a residental area. That show's how ridiculous some people are.. How sad and she owned and operated a child care facility man what is this world coming to..

That's just plain disgusting!!

Chelsea is an amazing person! She isn't this monster the press is making her out to be. She has dedicated her life to her husband and children, blood or not blood. If she was as vulgar as the press is making her out to be, then why is she an avid daycare provider, a foster parent? Why would the county or the state for that matter, approve her for all of this???? why??? She is such a beautiful and positive person, who doesn't deserve to be going through this. The cops and the press need to get together and put in more accurate information. All the stories that are out on this case are inaccurate, and have left out major details about what really happened! Details that are important to the public. Details that will really show who are the bad people! People always jump the gun when it comes to stories like this, and although people have the right to be worried, you shouldn't judge off of what you read, cus 9 out of 10 times its never accurate! Stop and think about this... Remember to judge others the way you want God to judge you! Your time will come for when you are judged!

Wow! I am just finding out about this! I know the accused and have known her in a limited capacity for years. I would never have thought she would do something so disgusting. I also trusted her as a loving caretaker of children and now feel betrayed. May justice be served accordingly.

was the boy ok w/ it? he should have objected to having to have sex in a serial killer van though. but maybe that was just the only place where they could f---k.

the woman should have at least had the dignity to have rented a nice motel room.

Okay Mz Lovely, let this amazing woman care for your son, or daughter. These stories, regardless of it's accuracy, needs to be told because people like Ms Lovely have a reality default system and don't believe that adults molest children.

Well Ms Katwoman, Chelsea has cared for my family for many years and we have never had a issue with her. I and my family members support her and we pray for her everyday. Chelsea has been up to the schools when her parents weren't able. She has cared for her daycare children through many of their own family crisis's and she has a family of her own that is so beautiful in many ways. And to the concerned community member, please don't let this story undermine your own knowledge of the accused when you know in your heart what kind of person she is. The charges were dropped and the evidence proves no foul play. She has suffered a big blow financially and mentally. Her name was tarnished and her sunny attitude has been dimmed. Unfortunately, this part of this story hasn't been told. Please pray for Chelsea and her family, because she isn't the only one who is left to pick up the pieces of the aftermath.
