Santa Monica man sentenced in beating death of girlfriend

A Santa Monica man was sentenced Thursday to 56 years to life in prison for murdering his girlfriend and stuffing her body in a car trunk, authorities said.

Adel Tabrizi Chapel, 25, was accused of using a hammer in 2009 to fatally beat Denise Figueroa, who was 22, the Los Angeles County district attorney's office said. Denise_figueroa_big

Authorities said Figueroa had been reported missing Feb. 28, 2009, after she left her mother's home and failed to come home.

A week later, police found her body in the trunk of a car in Valley Village. Officials had been notified by KTLA-TV Channel 5 that they had received an anonymous tip by fax saying that a homicide had been committed Feb. 28.
