A Marine from Camp Pendleton has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Wednesday night.

Staff Sgt. Justin Schmalstieg, 28, of Pittsburgh, Pa., was killed Wednesday in Helmand province, a Taliban stronghold.

Schmalstieg was assigned to the 1st Explosive Ordnance Disposal Company, 7th Engineer Support Battalion, 1st Marine Logistics Group, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Pendleton.

Schmalstieg had deployed twice to Iraq. "He loved what he was doing," his father, John Kilkey, a Pittsburgh police detective, told the Pittsburgh Tribune Review. "He was a good kid."

More than 50 Marines from Camp Pendleton have been killed this year in Afghanistan.
