L.A. sheriff's deputies shoot and kill suspect, injure dog in Quartz Hill

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies shot and killed a man in Quartz Hill on Tuesday evening after he threw a butcher knife at them, authorities said.

Deputies were serving a narcotics-related search warrant at about 6 p.m. when the suspect became hostile and unleashed a large dog, authorities said.

The dog was shot and injured by deputies, after which the man hurled a knife at one of the officers, authorities said.

The knife did not strike any of the deputies, but when the man reached down and picked up a second butcher knife, a deputy fired two rounds from a shotgun, striking and killing the man.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. The dog was taken by animal control.

The shooting is under investigation.
