Magnitude 4.0 earthquake strikes off Northern California coast

A magnitude 4.0 earthquake was reported Wednesday off the coast near Eureka.

The quake was centered in the Pacific Ocean about 56 miles southwest of Eureka and about 44 miles west of the town of Petrolia.

There were no reports of damage or injuries from the temblor. This part of Northern California is one of the more seismically active areas on the West Coast.

The quake was reported at 12:18 p.m.
