Man, 88, held in shooting death of 86-year-old at Seal Beach convalescent home

88 year old Roy Charles Laird is accused of shooting his 86 year old wife.

An 88-year-old man was in police custody Sunday after he allegedly shot and killed an 86-year-old woman  at a Seal Beach convalescent home, authorities said.

The  shooting occurred about noon at the Country Villa Healthcare Center, Seal Beach Police Sgt. Steve Bowles said.

Within three minutes of 911 calls, officers from the Seal Beach Police Department surrounded the facility and were joined by the California Highway Patrol, Los Alamitos police, Cypress police and Orange County sheriff’s deputies, Bowles said.

When they entered the facility, they were directed to a room where they found the woman, the man and a .38-caliber revolver, Bowles said.

Sure you have enough police departments represented here to take down an 86 year old?

What a joke!

This is to bizarre to even comment on.

I wonder if he will get a life sentence

Hmm, maybe she wanted to die and she asked him to. That seems the most logical anyway, hope that was why.

How sad for this man... His wife most likely had Alzheimer's (considering the place) and in his emotional pain and heartbreak for her condition, he thought he was doing the right thing.... + Those Nursing Home Villa's cost an average of $6,200.00 per month. Unfortunately, she probably didn't know who he was... He was most likely doing the best he could.

Going through it too... The really long good-bye.
May you never have to live it.

Will be interesting to see if it was the woman's husband or another resident with a grievance.

Yeah Vito,

No big deal, just a murderer with a handgun outstanding in a retirement home, nothing of concern, right? Great armchair tactician you are, I'm sure if an officer had responded alone and shot the suspect, you'd be criticizing that.

Now tell me againwhy the NRA is so popular !!!!

Were they related ?

There is also the possibility that the woman - who was the man's wife - requested it.

Crime dont have an age on it. Its sad for anybody to take someone else life. But this is real wack -something is being left out of this story. Like what took place in order for this to happen?????

Great story!
keep `em coming

I don't know why you think it is a joke uncle vito. An 86 year old man with a gun can still kill like a 26 year old with a gun. Until you have him in custody, he is a danger. There are a lot of 86 year old who are probably in better shape than you are.

See ....if she had a gun she could have protected herself.
We need more guns out there !

Riiiiiiiiight.

Vito, don't assume they knew the suspect was an 88 yr. old man when they first responded. They may have received calls regarding shots fired and believed an armed assailant was still inside the home.

Depending on the situation, a lot of calls that police initially get aren't always that specific. Besides, even if they knew how old he was, an armed guy willing to kill someone, no matter what his age, is capable of doing some serious damage with that weapon.

It's actually common sense to come prepared with serious backup.

SOUNDS LIKE OBAMA CARE IN THE EXTREME

Assisted suicide? Could have been his wife. But yeah, overkill on the police.

Where is the ombudsman?

It seems like after someone has lived for so long. That they would have better coping skills. But, this is a reflection of society today. A very bad reflection. Where was security at the convalescent home. How was he able to have a gun in his possession?

definitely sounds like a love triangle

He was just putting his terminally ill wife (friend) out of her misery!

this is what you can expect with modern medicine.

Expect to see more of this!

Just sitting here waiting for your typical L.A. Times right wing troll/xenophobe to make a comment or somehow tie this to "the illegal immigrant" problem.

What a tragedy.

I bet it was a mercy killing.....if so, they shoudl lt him go...

One final act of love for his sick wife. Must have been the hardest thing a man ever would have to do. God be with them.

I wonder if she had health problems that was causing her pain and he did it to prevent her from suffering.
