L.A. City College student stabbed, robbed of laptop

Click here for a Times crime database Two attackers confronted a Los Angeles City College student Monday night, stabbing the victim and fleeing with his backpack containing a laptop computer.

The 21-year-old student was taken to Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, where he received stitches on two wounds to his left hand, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said.

The student was attacked by two men about 7:25 p.m. as he was walking to class. "One of them lunged toward the victim with a knife, and the victim blocked the knife with his left hand and was cut," Sgt. Harry Van said.

He said the two assailants escaped on foot with the backpack, which had the computer inside.

In the last week, at least seven violent crimes and 26 property crimes have been reported in the area around the East Hollywood campus, according to The Times' Mapping L.A. crime database.

Anyone with information is asked to call Van at (323) 371-0689.

Its a good thing police are hard at work giving jay-walking tickets and busting down marijuana shops. I was assaulted and the cops didn't even go looking for the perpetrators when a witness told them exactly where they were going! Giving tickets and busting pot is a lot more profitable and safe for them.

Just about 1 year ago, I was out exercising(walking). Near Western and Beverly Blvd. It was about 10:00pm, three guys jumped me from behind. I literally fought for my life. By the grace of God, someone heard what was going on from there apartment. Then they ran off, the only thing they said was to be quite. I assume they were attempting to rob me. Paramedics and police took me to Hollywood Pres. I sustained a broken nose, concussion, cuts. But, I lived. This area is rampant with street gangs. Beware!!

Description of bad guys? survailence videos? Help the public stop this kinda thing.

How horrible for you who have been assaulted! Yes, please, I echo southoc's comment, more info so that a stop be put to it. I want to see more pro-activity for victims' rights.

I've stopped warning the clueless yuppies I see on the subway whipping out their laptops and netbooks. I'm not white, so they probably thought I was stupid for trying to give them a heads-up. You're waving the equivalent of a diamond ring in the faces of people who don't have a tenth of what you do. Keep the laptop at home where it belongs.

Just another example of our tax dollars hard at work. Just another couple of LAUSD's finest making the best of their education.

Here the cops are busy trying to bust law-abiding marijuana dispensaries when this is going on.
That LA top cop needs to get his priorities in order ! ! ! ! !

So "seven violent crimes and 26 property" crimes reported in the area during the last week. How many violent crimes did those downtown jaywalkers commit last week?

This happens because campus police are always in their office on the opposite side of the block where it is all residential houses and drink coffee all day. If they have one guard stand out front at all times this will at least deter the crime that happens in the neighborhood. Also, you need to get rid of the cheap and poor housing conditions and put plenty of lights and cameras.

So what did the guys LOOK LIKE ?? Is it "not politically correct" to mention there appearance including their skin color (Oh NO you RACIST!!!).
Come on you miserable whimp reporter, please REPORT!

Let's help out a a young man trying to do something with his life instead of commenting on the obvious. Is there a way to get money to this student so that he can purchase a new laptop?

I remember taking night classes at LACC, which is a great school but less than desirable people around at night. Actually during the day too. Not to say anything bad about the neighborhood, but its getting to the point that yes cameras would be a wise investment, and I know this sounds going overboard but maybe a fence / gate where you swipe your student card? The problem is going to your car/ subway / bus but alot happens also on campus.

It is sad because the school is great!

Connect a taser to your lap top. when they run zap them.

Very sorry to hear this. They should have guards out there at night.

The real key here is to be safe and aware in these war-torn-like neighborhoods. Make an extra effort to stay with groups of people when you're leaving the campus.

Laptops are hardly worth half of the value the original purchase price, and for most students it's the most expensive thing they own, and the greatest tool for their education. What is really being stolen is their possibilities for an education.

The cowardly fools that commit crimes like this will most likely face their own karma. Their own third grade level educations will probably result in incarceration after some other more fatal acts of crime have been committed.

This city needs to wake up, the obviously high number of violent crimes clearly sends the message that the city government is not doing their job. The Mayor is probably off scandalizing with some reporter, while the police force congratulates themselves on their backs for their minimum reductions in the crime rate.

He was lucky to get away with relatively minor injuries. I bought an invisible laptop knapsack and this has helped give me some confidence when carrying my laptop around.
