Authorities search for reported corpse in Venice canal [Updated]

Firefighters and police were working to recover what was reported to be a dead boy in a Venice canal Saturday morning in the 2300 block of Grand Canal Court, authorities said.

The body was reported by a caller at 8:26 a.m. A lifeguard truck was sent to the scene to help retrieve the reported corpse.

The LAPD said the report was still being investigated and that there were no further details.

[Updated 12:27 p.m.: Officer Norma Eisenman said the body found floating in the main Venice canal appears to be that of a male in his 20s or 30s.  Homicide detectives are currently at the scene investigating.]

"reported to be a dead boy". "reported by a caller". "reported corpse". "reported by a caller". With all these reports, what is really needed is a fact checker to maybe confirm some of these allegations. Do we know anything for sure? What is reality?

And was the LAPD investigating the report of the corpse or were they investigating whether there was actually a body in the (alleged) canal?

I hope this piece was written by an intern and not someone on the main news desk. (just my cranky 2¢)

Why don't you go down there and investigate for yourself what is going on since you are such a critic? You could be a investigative reporter....albeit a cranky one!

"boy" was probably a misspelling by a 911 dispatcher (who must type everything a caller tells them) who meant to write "body". Oh yes, simple news stories are getting harder and harder to decipher because as in other businesses, employees are not given the time to do the job correctly.

I too have a problem with the news being reported before there are enough facts gathered. The subsequent updates and edits annoy me. I can wait another couple of hours to read these stories after we really know what's going on. It seems disrespectful to jump the gun and report things wrong.
