Suspect sought after deputy-involved shooting in Compton

November 11, 2010 |  8:54 pm

Authorities were searching Thursday night for a suspected gang member who was fired upon by a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy in Compton.

Two male deputies with the Sheriff’s Department's gang prevention unit approached a group of people standing in the 300 block of Tichenor Street about 5:30 p.m. when one of the people ran,  Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Capt. Ray Leyva said.

One of the deputies chased him and fired several rounds when the suspect jumped up from behind a car and pointed a semiautomatic handgun at the deputy, Leyva said. The suspect ran away and was believed to be uninjured. It was not known if he fired his weapon.

Neither of the deputies was injured. No other information was available.
